Good Morning
I have a Wilderness trailboat (http://www.wilderness.org.uk/) and like many of the other owners use the waterways of France and Europe. I would like to create some Google maps of the French system. Can you give me some instruction has how it is done please.
I have been entering many French canals on Canalplan and slipways on our own site, and I would pass any code onto you if required to add to your site.
Many thanks Tony Radstone Wilderness boat – Haricot
Email me: tony@ukwrs.co.uk and i’ll send you some step by step examples.
I like your site. Is there a way of calculating distances? We have a boat share of two weeks every July and are based at Brinklow. This year, we’d like to do the Coventry, Trent and Mersey, down through Leicester and back onto the the Oxford to get back to Brinklow. I don’t know if it’s possible with the odd stop-off to do it in the two weeks.
I could sit down with a Nicholson’s guide and count the mile posts but I’m basically lazy, so any advice you could give would be appreciated.
You best bet for working out distances is to use CanalPlan: http://www.canalplan.org.uk/
Hi Tony, Great Site, very useful. Do you plan to or did you have Bridge Numbers and Lock information on your maps? I am an independant Marine Electrician and I use your site to find out where my customers are. Bridge and Lock details would be very useful, not just to me but to all boaters on the Waterways. Mammoth task to enter all the info but is it something you have considered?
Kindest regards,
Mike Hancox.
I considered it, and started work on a few routes. Then I realised how long it would take. I’m still doing it bit by bit when other projects aren’t taking up my time.
Amazing site, I’m looking at it from a point of view of walking / biking the towpaths.
I’ve downloaded a load of the maps and notice that there are 3 colours used, yet no key anywhere explaining them (or have I just missed it).
Also is there any way of knowing if there are usable towpaths or walking / cycling, other than Googling the individual canals?
cheers
Matt
Oh I’m such an idiot!
Blue – In water an navigable
Green – Dry/partially watered
Red – route of an old tramway/inclined plane etc.
Does this mean that the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal system is out of commission as far as boat navigation is concerned? Because it is all green. Maybe the list should be divided into navigable and none navigable (good for fishing, walking and picknics only) waterways.
At the time I did the map, most of it didn’t exist anymore. Some bits are being restored, but i’m not sure on progress.
